THE SPORTS LURE

Anyone interested in exploring the outdoors in Johnson County has to make a stop at The Sports Lure in downtown Buffalo. A fixture on Main Street since 1968, the Sports Lure offers plenty of merchandise for purchase. It also has a great rental program for summer and winter fun. Biking enthusiasts can rent a mountain bike, full suspension mountain bike or e-bikes. Campers can rent sleeping bags and pads, tents, backpacks, and stoves. Anglers can rent spinning rods/reels, fly rods, waders and boots. All summer rentals are available at daily or weekly rates. In the winter, Alpine skis, boots and poles are available for adults, juniors and children. Other winter equipment for rent include snowboards, Nordic ski packages, Nordic skating packages, and snowshoes for adults or juniors. Winter rentals are available at daily rates. Call ahead to ensure equipment is available.

For the big equipment — ATVs, side-by-sides, campers, and more — Ultimate Outdoors is the ultimate stop in Johnson County. The knowledgeable staff can provide information about routes and destinations in the Bighorn Mountains. Ultimate Outdoors also offers guided ATV tours and guided snowmobile tours in the Bighorn National Forest, authorized by U.S. Forest Service Special Use Permit. ATV and UTV tours include the vehicle, helmet, goggles, safety instruction, a CPR/First Aid-certified guide and bottled water. Tours are offered for a half-day or full day, with a sack lunch included for the full day.

SUP WYOMING

For those who want to spend some time on the lakes, SUP Wyoming can provide stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) with free delivery to and pickup from lakes around Buffalo — including Lake DeSmet and Tie Hack Reservoir. Online booking is available and equipment can be rented for up to 24-hours increments with family rates available. SUP Wyoming provides the inflatable paddleboard, adjustable paddle, ankle leash, removable fin, hand pump, adult-size life jacket and backpack-style carry bag. Inflatable kayaks also are available.

For guided adventures in the Bighorn Mountains, Blacktooth Excursions offers excursions that can be customized for those looking to fish or those looking for family fun. The guide service offers a multiple-day guided trout fishing excursion; a lakeside camp with fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and relaxation; and a drop-camp with walk-in/out or ride-in/out options. Lucky Chukar Ranch

This ranch opened to the public in September 2023 as a private game bird farm. It offers chukar, bobwhite quail and occasionally some pheasants for training dogs. Hunts are usually about four hours long and will cover natural landscape with steep hills, native grasses, sagebrush, rocks, some cactus, and a few scattered shrubs. It is open from the fall to the spring. Lucky Chukar does have dry camping spots available and plans to add a guest house in the future.

307 AIRBOAT ADVENTURES

You can take a boat ride on Lake DeSmet in just about any weather with 307 Powerboat Adventures. While not based in Johnson County, this Wyoming firm will take groups on to Lake DeSmet weather it’s snow covered, ice covered or just water. The snow adventures are more fun, however, being the only boat on the lake while doing doughnuts or drifting.

BOOKCLIFF ALPACAS

Leroy and Mary Jo George have been raising alpacas for more than a decade and moved to Johnson County in January of 2022. Visitors can see the alpacas and check out the store that includes yarn, roving, and batt for fiber artists; hats, gloves, scarves, socks, blankets, and capes made from alpaca fiber; and jewelry and crafts.

Yoders Country Market

YODERS

Opened in 2020, Yoders Country Market features an extensive selection of hand-made Amish goods including quilts, furniture, leather items, crafts, unique food items, chocolates, and more. The bakery is open every Friday and Saturday, and donuts are available on Saturdays. Bring cash because they do not accept credit cards. Yoders opened a second building, the Trabing Store, in 2024 to offer a greater selection of items, including furniture.

ARROWHEAD FORGE

Arrowhead Forge School of Blacksmithing is a working artist blacksmith shop owned by David Osmundsen. His style involves forging wrought ironwork into functional art and is influenced by designs in nature. The shop is open by appointment and to registered students during classes. The school offers a week-long fundamental blacksmithing classes; a three-day iron accessories class; and several specialized classes for making frontier knives, tomahawks, cooking utensils, and more.

MOUNTAIN MEADOW WOOL

Family-owned Mountain Meadow Wool Mill is the largest full service mill in the West. It offers custom processing, custom blending and spinning, as well as 23 different types of yarns that can be hand-dyed in custom colors. Its process is 100 percent natural with biodegradable soaps and non-petroleum spinning oil. Opened in 2007 to revitalize the American wool industry by offering fair prices to local sheep ranchers, Mountain Meadow Wool currently processes more than 60,000 pounds of wool a year. The facility is open for self-guided individual tours and guided group tours.
