Memorializing Air Base Crash Sites

Mark Milliken will present “Locating, Documenting, and Memorializing Casper Army Air Base Training Crash Sites” during a program presented by the Johnson County Historical Society on Monday, September 22, in the Twing Room at the Johnson County Library.

Milliken is a consulting petroleum geologist. He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geology, and he has worked for a major oil company and several production firms. He is a Vietnam-era U.S. Air Force veteran. He has been a volunteer for the Wyoming Veterans Memorial Museum since 2001, capturing stories and oral histories from World War II veterans. He is president of the board of directors of the Friends of the Wyoming Veterans Memorial Museum, a non-profit LLC.

In 2017, the museum requested the Friends organization locate, document and memorialize six Casper Army Air Base training crash sites. The museum considers these sites significant because they had been mostly lost to history. Four sites have been re-discovered and documented. Relatives of the crews lost were located. Relatives from three crews were able to attend military funerals conducted by the Wyoming Army National Guard.
