Veterans Program: Henry Carrington

The Fort Phil Kearny/Bozeman Trail Association will present a Veterans Day program with Sonny Reisch speaking on “Spies & Spy Master Henry Carrington.”

Carrington led the 18th Infantry, which built and manned Fort Phil Kearny in 1866. He was relieved of his command not long after the Fetterman Massacre in December of 1866, when 80 troops and Captain William J. Fetterman were overwhelmed in an Indian ambush north of the fort.

Prior to his time in the West, Carrington was heroic for the Union in the Civil War, investigating the efforts of secret organizations attempting to discourage enlistments and encourage desertions. As an intelligence officer, he led a network of spies producing information essential to the Northern Department of the Army.

Reisch’s presentation on Carrington will be at Kearney Community Hall.
