Winter, snow, Wyoming, cowboys. Put these together and you’ve got a recipe for winter fun like you’ve never imagined in an increasingly popular competition called ski-joring. Originating in Scandanavian countries as a mode of transportation, ski-joring consists of a skier pulled along by a horse and rider. Modified into a competition setting, skiers are pulled by horses opened up at full speed, along tracks complete with jumps and slalom gates.
A welcomed break from feeding cattle and chopping iced over water holes, SkiJoring has become a popular winter “rodeo” type event for local and out of town cowboys and cowgirls alike, who play as hard as they work. The ski-jor winter “rodeo” circuit has become established across the country, with cities like Sheridan, WY and Sundance, WY having hosted their own competitions for a number of years.
Buffalo Joins In
Brought to you by Buffalo Events, Inc., his year Buffalo, WY will be joining these cities, hosting Johnson County’s first ever ski-joring competition in February 2021. Dubbed the Johnson County Ski-Jor Wars, this event is nod to our area’s historic Johnson County Cattle Wars, and is shaping up to be one of the area’s largest winter events. With events for skiers and riders as well as spectators, you won’t want to miss it.
The competition will take place Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021 at Prosinski Park, with registration & live music Friday night at the historic Occidental Saloon and awards ceremonies following the event Saturday night at The Cowboy Saloon.
How It All Came About – A Family Affair
Local outfitter and guide Adam Todd and his nephew Kyle have been participating in the Sundance and Red Lodge, MT competitions for the last number of years. More recently, Kyle’s wife, Jacy, has joined in on the fun pulling skiers at the Sheridan, WY events (pictured above: Jacy horseback, Kyle skiing in black).
With the years of participation under their belts, the Todd’s began to feel that it only made sense to include Buffalo in the circuit of the ski-joring competitions. And thus began the 2 year long preparation to what will be Buffalo’s inaugural ski-joring event this February. Claudia Todd, Adam’s wife and founding member of Buffalo Events Inc., assisted in getting the event picked up under their umbrella and started the ball rolling with permitting, advertising and working closely with area officials to help bring the dream to life.
