Jim Gatchell Museum

100 Fort St Buffalo, WY 82834

In the spring of 1900, Pharmacist Theodore James Gatchell, better known as Jim, opened the first drugstore in Johnson County. The Buffalo Pharmacy became a popular stopping place for cowboys, lawmen, settlers, cattle barons, and famous Army scouts.

Jim became a trusted friend to the region’s Native Americans, local residents, and those that passed through town. Many of those that befriended Jim brought him several gifts over the years. From guns to medicine bags, bow and arrows to clothing, those gifts now help tell Jim’s incredible story inside the Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum.

Hoofprints of the Past Museum

344 Nolan Ave., Kaycee, WY 82639

Hoofprints of the Past Museum was founded in 1989 in a historic building in downtown Kaycee. Offering a look into the Bozeman Trail, Fort Reno, the Dull Knife Battle, Outlaws and the Hole in the Wall Gang, and the Johnson County Cattle War.
There are numerous displays on local history, historic artifacts and the first Kaycee school and jail are on site. The museum also offers a number of local historical tours, including Hole in the Wall and Johnson County War Tours.

The Historic Occidental Hotel

With its modest beginnings as a camp spot for a group of travelers along the Bozeman Trail in the summer of 1879, it soon became the social & political hub of the area and eventually the foundation of our town. Now fully restored, rent a historic room, drink at the saloon, or listen to music by the fire in the lobby.

Be sure to stop at Lolly’s Sugar Shack for top-notch breakfast pastries and coffee, stop in the Candy Store for sweets & treats, book a dinner reservation at The Virginian Restaurant and head to the Busy Bee Cafe for lunch.

A hidden gem, Yoders offers an immense selection of handmade quilts and crafts, woven rugs, wood furniture, wooden crafts, toys, tack, canned goods, egg noodles, and specialty desserts Friday and Saturday. Off the beaten path, and oh so worth it!
